Precision SuperCouplers
SuperCouplers are a better connection between components and mechanical ground
Overview and Theory
Made from the same 7075 aluminum as the Precision Coupler and the Series 2 Rollerblock, the Precision Supercoupler borrows from Rollerblock technology to deliver improved coupling efficiency to surfaces for better energy transfer. Four Precision Supercouplers are supplied with the Quantum Platform. The performance potential of the Quantum demanded a leap forward in coupler technology, and the patented coupling technology of the Rollerblocks provides this advantage.Hard Coat Anodizing
The Precision Supercoupler consists of a 0.8125" thick disc of hard coat anodized 7075 aircraft alloy aluminum which has been precision machined to nearly perfectly flat and parallel top and bottom surfaces. As in the Rollerblock, hard coat anodizing differs from the "garden variety" anodizing (usually black in color) found on most electronic components in that it causes a profound change in the hardness of the surface of the aluminum, creating a "skin" which is harder than most steels. Typical surface hardness with this process is on the order of chromium steel or greater; the ordinary black anodized finish (such as on CD players, etc.) is little more than a surface dye or coloration. The hard-coat skin of the Precision Supercoupler, as in the Rollerblock, serves two purposes: first, it constrain-layer damps the surface of the aluminum alloy body, making it less prone to self-resonance and making it appear harder to the interfacing surface, and second, it acts as a higher-density layer which enables faster transmission of mechanical energy, enabling better drainage of energy at higher frequencies. In principle, its purpose is to take advantage of mechanical "skin effect" at the higher frequencies of transmitted mechanical vibration.
The Matrix
The bottom of the Precision Supercoupler has a "matrix" pattern of holes, along with beveled edging. As in the Series 2 Rollerblock, this "matrix" serves both as a waveguide which enhances the penetration of mechanical energy into the support surface by presenting a more optimal angle interface (see the "Our Technology" section", but also increases contact pressure to the supporting surface, affecting superior energy transmission. The Threaded 1/4-20 hole
Like the Precision Couplers and Rollerblock Jr., the top of the Precision Supercoupler has a hole threaded for a 1/4-20 thread, which is a very common thread for many posts and equipment feet. This hole, dead center, can serve several purposes: it allows threading to dedicated posts or anchors; it allows screwing two Precision SuperCouplers together (or to Rollerblock Jr., which have the same hole) for special coupling applications needing added height; or, the hole can be used as a receptacle for the tips of spikes and cones under racks and stands. In this last regard the Precision Supercoupler makes an ideal floor protector, since it not only protects floors but also provides a superb "termination" for vibratory energy exiting a rack or stand through its bottom spikes.Deployment
SuperCouplers should be used like any footer device, to make a "bridge" between the bare chassis of the component and its mechanical ground, i.e. the shelf, platform, etc. In the case of the Quantum or Quantum Signature Platforms, one Precision Supercoupler should be placed on each of the Quantum's quadrant sections, thus coupling each section to a different part of the component's chassis. In all cases, the matrix side can face up or down.
